Product - Handmade raw diamond and rough gemstone jewelry
About - I am a young woman from the Netherlands married to a very handsome Germany. We have a one year old daughter.
I started making jewelry when I was in university, studying tropical forestry. I was in Indonesia for fieldwork, and while traveling I purchased some amazing gemstones in South Kalimantan, and freshwater pearls on the island of Lombok. I didn’t have all the right tools or materials, nor did I know of the right place to sell it. So I just made it for myself and for friends and family.
After a busy day at work and taking care of my daughter, I need a creative outlet. Etsy gives me the opportunity to give purpose to that creativity. I used to do a lot of rock climbing, but some tropical diseases (dengue and typhoid) took my energy and it was hard to bring my baby along. I can make jewelry on a table in our living room. It looks chaotic to an outsider, but I can find back most of my stuff in mere seconds. Organized chaos! When I'm thinking about a new design and working with my hands, I become completely absorbed. It's very likely I don't hear you when you talk to me, or reply in auto-pilot (as a teenager, my brother and sister used to trick me into promising things when I was concentrated on something).
I absolutely love to use diamonds, colorful gemstones and pearls. I have decided to focus on raw diamond and rough gemstone jewelry for the future, as I adore their imperfections. I spent hours going through lots of gemstones and diamonds picking out the most beautiful rocks and selecting approximate pairs. I enjoy going through hundreds of stones. Oh, the pleasure of finding extraordinary beauties in a bag of rough gems! I also spend a lot of time trying to find special stones, such as color shifting gemstones, and clear rocks with explicit inclusions. You now know my favorite thing of making jewelry is selecting the rocks and imagining a new design with them.
For me, sustainability is a primary concern. I therefore try to purchase diamonds primarily from sources that can assure me that the diamonds are mined in accordance with the Kimberly process and are not subsidizing violent conflict. I try to use scraps for my shagreen stingray leather jewelry. And I try to use packaging from recycled, reused and natural material, or boxes that can be used again. I love my dyed banana leafs for wrapping gifts, so colorful and special!
