I am proud to be a child of the 80's. Things like the original Nintendo Entertainment System and Back to the Future don't come around every day. I still remember being around five years old and waking up early on Saturday mornings with my brother. We'd make a mess trying to get our own cereal and then sit in front of the tv for two of the greatest shows ever made, He-man and Transformers. These shows were truly a pinnacle of human achievement. Okay, that may be a bit of an overstatement, but not by much.
When the Transformers movies started coming out a few years ago, I was so excited. What's not to love about giant shape-changing robots that fight each other, leaving a path of destruction in their wake?
A few weeks ago, my wife mentioned a Transformers series that I had never heard of before - Transformers: Beast Wars Season 1.
Because this series came out in 1996, I must have missed it. I didn't have nearly as much cartoon watching time in high school as I wanted. This series has what you'd expect from transformers, but with a new twist.
Instead of the typical autobots and decepticons, we were introduced to their decendents - the Maximals and Predicons.
Also, instead of shifting from vehicles and different types of machinery into robots, now they disguise themselves as animals. The two groups land on a mysterious planet looking for a source of "Energon" and try and reach it before their enemies.
It's been fun to watch this series with my kids and introduce them to a franchise that I've loved since childhood.
