Joe-Joe Nut and Biscuit Bill are two famous detectives from Acorn Valley, who always "get their man". On the day that Maple Moo's rare and priceless mineral goes missing, Joe-Joe is tending to the bullying antics of Kojo and his five lion brothers. He believes that they may be the suspects, but Biscuit Bill has other ideas.
The two head over to the Moo's residence and question Maple and her mother, Melinda and find out that Maple's friends were over earlier and she was showing them her new mineral, when it went missing.
Joe-Joe and Bill begin unraveling the mystery as they question each of her friends. Visiting each of their houses, the two begin to question the suspects; the twins, Brutus and Betty Blue Beaver, who also collect minerals, Candy Cardinal who collects gemstones, Liam Llama who is a volcano enthusiast and Huckleberry Moose who collects rocks. Each of the friends has a reason to take the mineral and the two detectives sift through the evidence to find the truth behind the missing mineral. When the truth is finally found, the outcome isn't what anyone would have expected!
I found the book to be enjoyable and educational. Each of the friends collections are explained to the reader, such as how sedimentary rocks are formed, why gemstones are precious and more. I really enjoyed reading about science while the case was being solved. Joe-Joe is a very funny character, while Bill is his intelligent sidekick, and though Joe-Joe's heart is in the right place, Bill is the one who uses his noodle to follow the clues and solve the mystery.
The story is a bit predictable but the problem solving skills that are exercised would benefit a young reader and I am sure they will find the book likeable and worth a read. I really liked the additional science experiments added to the back of the book. Not only is this a reader but it has hands on approach that would benefit many young people. The illustrations aren't the greatest, I found them to be unappealing, as did my young folks, they found them to be too dark and I would have to agree with them. The pictures will not take away from the story and the educational message portrayed within and young readers will definitely enjoy the antics of Joe-Joe Nut and Biscuit Bill.
