Book of A Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale is an amazing writer, and I love her books. This particular story is a retelling of a Grimm's fairy tale (Maid Maleen) that I have never heard of, and I didn't like the story as much. It just wasn't my favorite fairy tale. The telling of the story was wonderful and Shannon Hale does a great job of making her characters interesting and engaging. If you love fairy tales or Shannon Hale, this is a great book.

Immediately after pledging her loyalty to the Lady Saren, Dashti and her lady are locked in a tower. It is Dashti's responsibility to manage their supplies and see that both girls survive seven years locked away from the world. But when unwanted visitors arrive at the tower, things go from bad to worse. The rats are slowly diminishing the girls supplies, and a ruler from a nearby land that is more wolf than man won't leave the girls alone. When several years go by without any contact from the outside world, Dashti decides that to survive they must break out of their tower prison and find refuge in a foreign land. In the foreign kingdom, Lady Saren forces Dashti to pretend that she is the lady and Saren is her maid in order to protect Saren from the man wolf. But it is treason to imitate royalty, and if anyone finds out Dashti could be banished, or worse. How far is Dashti willing to go to protect Saren and fulfill her oath?
